During two weeks in August, BDW Kent Division demonstrated its commitment to building strong communities by supporting The Hive Thanet – a local centre dedicated to education, recreation, and training for people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
As part of their annual Community Week initiative, 67 BDW Kent colleagues volunteered an impressive 87 days to help expand The Hive’s facilities. The team worked together to construct two new remote classrooms using flat-packed cabins, transforming them into warm, welcoming spaces for classroom learning. These new classrooms will enable The Hive Thanet to reach even more young people and adults with SEND, providing vital opportunities for growth, learning, and social connection.
The project was made possible thanks to the generosity of seven subcontractors who donated materials and goods, ensuring the new classrooms were fully equipped and ready for use.
Special recognition also goes to Rachel Whyman, Kent’s Divisional Charity Lead, whose dedication and organisation were instrumental in bringing the project to life. Rachel said:
“Out of all the jobs I carry out within my role, being a part of the Community Projects for the Division is by far my favourite. I always say it, but they are the best team days you can do, everyone enjoys them, and I never struggle when it comes to support for volunteering days which says a lot about everyone at BDW Kent wanting to help make a difference. Each project is different and I’m learning a lot along the way, but it is by far the most rewarding aspect of the role.”
The BDW Kent team is proud to have played a part in supporting The Hive Thanet’s mission and looks forward to seeing the difference these new classrooms will make in the community.
