We’re proud to celebrate the launch of Barratt Redrow’s landmark commitment to inclusive play this month. As the UK’s largest housebuilder, Barratt Redrow is setting a powerful example by pledging to ensure that every new play area they build is accessible and inclusive – making play the standard, not the exception.
New research commissioned by Barratt Redrow reveals the scale of exclusion faced by children with disabilities. Half of parents surveyed said their child is excluded from play due to inaccessible playgrounds. Parents of children with physical disabilities are travelling an average of 5.37 miles to reach a suitable play area, and 51% say they’re relying more on screens because of the lack of accessible outdoor spaces.
We’re proud that Barratt Redrow is taking a stand to ensure outdoor play is truly inclusive. We’re especially pleased that our national charity partner, Whizz Kidz, played a key role in shaping this important guidance. Their expertise and advocacy have helped ensure that the voices and needs of disabled children and young wheelchair users are at the heart of this initiative.
The new Inclusive Play Guidance, developed in collaboration with Whizz Kidz and other leading experts, will see inclusive equipment, accessible surfaces, and thoughtfully designed play spaces integrated into communities across the UK. These spaces will support imaginative, sensory, active, and quiet play – giving every child the opportunity to thrive.
Barratt Redrow has also committed to working directly with children and young people to design play areas that reflect the needs of local communities. This is a bold step toward building environments where all families feel welcome, supported, and included.
